Program description

If you want to positively touch young lives and shape growing minds through education, the Bachelor of Education programme at CBU will help you realise your true purpose. The 60-credit Bachelor of Education (BEd) programme provides aspiring teachers with the critical skills, information, and experiences they need to become professional educators in only 15 months, beginning each May.
Candidates may apply to the Elementary Education or Secondary Education streams, with both offering opportunity to apply appropriate curriculum, instructional theory, and practises for a career in education. In addition to its emphasis on Education for Sustainability and Indigenous education, the curriculum offers a service-learning project and a series of professionalism workshops.

Throughout the programme, students gain hands-on teaching experience through 18 weeks of practicum. Graduates of the programme are entitled to apply for a teaching licence in Nova Scotia, as well as licensure and employment in any other province, territory, or foreign opportunity.

Fee for two semester (1 year education) is 20,735 CAD for international students.

Requirements for applicants

Elementary Education Stream (Grades P-6)

  • Social Studies: six credits in university social studies from among History (with a preference for local and Canadian History), Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Law, Classics, African Canadian Studies, Mi’kmaq Studies, Acadian Studies and/or Philosophy
  • Science: Six credits in university science coursework from any one or combination of the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology/Earth Sciences, Oceanography, and Environmental Studies
  • Mathematics: Six credits in university Mathematics coursework with a preference for a course in fundamental concepts
  • English: Six credits in university English coursework
  • Three credits of Critical Study Coursework
  • Three credits of Developmental Psychology: PSYC 2601 or equivalent three credits in university Developmental Psychology coursework.

Secondary Education (Grades 7-12):

  • First Teachable Area: A concentration of at least thirty credit hours of university coursework in a single discipline selected from below.
  • Second Teachable Area: A concentration of at least eighteen credit hours of university coursework in a second single discipline university coursework in a single discipline selected from below.
  • Intermediate/Secondary Teachables: Mi’kmaw Language, English, Math, French, Fine Arts, Technology, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology/Earth Sciences, Oceanography or Environmental Studies) and Social Studies (History, Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Law, Economics, African Canadian Studies, or Mi’kmaq Studies). Anthropology can be used as a second teachable area only. Business (Business Administration, Commerce, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Organizational Behaviour, Secretarial Arts), and Family Studies (Combination of courses from two of the following three areas: Foods and Nutrition, Family Dynamics and Textiles/Housing).

English Language Requirements

  • TOEFL score of 550 (paper test), 213 (computer test), or 80 (internet test)
  • IELTS Academic (and IELTS Indicator) score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0
  • Pearson PTE (Academic) score of 59
  • Duolingo English Test score of 115
  • If you have completed at least two years in a secondary school (as recognized by CBU) or have completed at least 30 credit hours (or equivalent) at a post-secondary institution (as recognized by CBU) where English is the primary language of instruction, you are not required to submit a language score. Official documentation will be required to confirm this period of study was in English.
