Program description
The Bachelor of Arts — Art Major includes two concentrations: Art History and Integrated Visual Studies.
The Art History focus develops students' critical thinking abilities and understanding of worldwide visual arts within social, historical, cultural, and aesthetic contexts. Students learn about global visual and material culture. Our Art History curriculum covers global art history, from the Italian Renaissance to modern African, women's, and aboriginal North American art. Art history graduates work in academia, museums, historical societies, and auction houses, using their visual literacy and analytical research skills.
The Integrated Visual Studies focus is appropriate for students to build skills in making and thinking. By creating and analyzing visual art, photography, cinema, television, and commercial imagery, students learn to examine visual communication from aesthetic, theoretical, scientific, economic, sociological, and historical perspectives. Studio and academic classes are balanced to teach students how society is represented and produced visually in the 21st century. Integrated Visual Studies students can combine multidisciplinary academic interests with studio-based theoretical and technical art producing explorations.
