Program description

The Major and Minor in History at CSU provide students with courses that cover global human history, along with unique aspects related to our status as Colorado’s Morrill Act land-grant university. We have pioneered the establishment of graduate public history programs and currently offer an undergraduate specialization in Digital and Public History, along with concentrations in General History, Language, and Social Studies Teaching.

History majors pursue diverse careers in public history, including roles in museums, archives, state and local government agencies focused on historic preservation and cultural resource management, the National Park Service, the Forest Service, and consulting. They also serve as educators and administrators in schools, engage in public service, and are equipped for graduate and professional studies across various disciplines. We provide internships in several sectors for CSU credit to assist students in exploring their historical interests.

Program structure

STEP 1: FIND YOUR FOOTING One option for completing your History degree requirements is to choose a trail of courses linked by the same theme:

  • War and Diplomacy

  • Women and Gender

  • Revolution

  • Race and Ethnicity

  • Empire, Colonialism and Borderlands

  • Religion

  • Environment

STEP 2: START DOWN A TRAIL When you find a trail that appeals to your interests, enro l in courses linked to the trail. Use these courses to fulfi l your degree requirements.

STEP 3: DISCOVER CONNECTIONS In your coursework, make connections along the trails you've journeyed. Consider research projects that connect to your trail's theme. Talk to faculty and your peers to make more connections outside the classroom.

STEP 4: COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE Consider doing a capstone project that coordinates with your trail. Use the courses you've completed along your trail to fulfi l your history requirements and electives.

  • A cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale)                                                                      

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS: 6 Note: students may be granted full admission with lower scores of 5.5 IELTS however they would need to complete an English test that may result in EAP coursework being required alongside regular coursework for 1-2 semesters
  • TOEFL: 72 Note: students may be granted full admission with lower scores of 60-71 TOEFL however they would need to complete an English test that may result in EAP coursework being required alongisde regular coursework for 1-2 semesters
  • Duolingo: 110
  • PTEA: 50
  • Other Tests: Successful completion of the Intensive English Program (IEP) at CSU
