Program description
Data Science is the process of discovering information and insights via data analysis. As such, it is based on the study of algorithms and their implementation in computer science, the power of abstraction and geometric and topological formalism in mathematics, data modeling and analysis in statistics. It has arisen as a distinct area in reaction to the deluge of data from web-enabled sensors and instruments, mobile devices, online logs and transactions, and the availability of computer power for data storage and processing. Modern data is difficult to manage not simply because it is so enormous, but also because it is becoming more varied and unstructured. Nonetheless, information gathered from this data is transforming a wide range of human endeavors, from health policy to high-energy physics.
