Program description

Environmental engineers develop strategies to reduce pollution and prevent environmental damage. The Environmental Engineering undergraduate program emphasizes physical, chemical, and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering basics. The All-University Core Curriculum offers a diverse education in communication, liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences. Upper-division engineering courses include air, water, and land pollution prevention and control. Environmental Engineering majors must take courses in organic and environmental chemistry, microbiology, hydrology, statistics, environmental toxicity, and water treatment. Technical electives specialize in a field. The same year-long capstone design experience as Civil Engineering majors, seniors work in teams on real-world engineering problems.

CSU Environmental Engineering graduates may find employment in regulatory agencies, engineering consulting organizations, and environmental divisions of large corporations, particularly in energy and manufacturing. Graduates are employed as hydraulic engineers, water resources engineers, environmental engineers, geoenvironmental engineers, reclamation engineers, stormwater engineers, floodplain managers, groundwater engineers, hydrologists, urban/regional planners, water infrastructure engineers or managers, contract administrators, facilities engineers or managers, irrigation engineers, ecological engineers, and educators. Graduate studies in a certain field is recommended to prepare for more sophisticated technical duties after graduation.

Requirements for applicants

GPA requirements

  • A cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale) AND
  • Four years of college-prep math; Algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2 or equivalents are preferred. The fourth year of math must be at or above the level of algebra 2 (e.g. algebra 3, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, college algebra, etc.) Statistics is not a qualifying math course.
  • Grades of C or better in all completed math courses AND
  • One year of chemistry or physics completed or in progress.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS: 6 Note: students may be granted full admission with lower scores of 5.5 IELTS however they would need to complete an English test that may result in EAP coursework being required alongside regular coursework for 1-2 semesters
  • TOEFL: 72 Note: students may be granted full admission with lower scores of 60-71 TOEFL however they would need to complete an English test that may result in EAP coursework being required alongisde regular coursework for 1-2 semesters
  • Duolingo: 110
  • PTEA: 50
  • Other Tests: Successful completion of the Intensive English Program (IEP) at CSU
