Program description
The Geography major is housed within the Department of Anthropology and Geography. Majors gain a broad understanding of geography through academic work and internship opportunities. The major focuses on interactions between humans and the environment in an era of fast global change. Students can comprehend geographic features, patterns, and processes by critically studying the various relationships between space, location, humans, built, and natural environments.
The Geography curriculum also focuses on mountain ecosystems and human-environment interactions. Courses use teacher knowledge in Colorado-specific fields of study. Geography faculty conduct applied research in Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, Patagonia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Melanesia, and Africa using a variety of research methods such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial modeling, spatial statistics, participatory methods, and ethnography.
Potential Occupations
The Geography major, like many other Liberal Arts majors, provides students with a comprehensive academic background that will prepare them for a variety of occupations in both the public and private sectors. Geography majors learn to think independently and critically, communicate well, and function in a multicultural society. Graduates' careers vary depending on their Geography emphasis. Geographers frequently work in international development, foreign service, education, conservation/natural resource management, urban and regional planning, data analysis, data management, GIS analyst, marketing, and business. Graduates with advanced studies can pursue academic positions in geography.
