Program description
The Master of Arts in Anthropology at CSU equips students for admission into a Ph.D. program and for professional positions outside academia. The curriculum leverages the many research interests of our professors, who specialize in cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and both human and physical geography. The program offers the choice of writing a thesis or creating a portfolio as the primary evidence of readiness for further study or professional employment.
Learning Objectives
Acquiring a Master of Arts degree from the Anthropology and Geography Department will provide you the ability to:
- Display proficiency in the theory and practice of anthropology, as well as its proper application.
- Conduct original research to answer academic topics or solve social problems.
- Recognize and value the fact that people are diverse in both location and time.
- Have the necessary knowledge and experience to enroll in a doctoral program in anthropology or to work in a field directly connected to it.
Program structure
Plan A: The thesis option requires at least 30 semester credits of coursework focused on anthropological subjects pertinent to the participant's professional objectives. The thesis is the conclusion of a research effort conducted by the student under the supervision of their advisor. The final test includes a thesis defense and other components of the academic curriculum.
Plan B: The non-thesis option is designed for students aiming to cultivate a comprehension of Anthropology that will facilitate their progression to a PhD program in the field or enhance their professional endeavors. Plan B students are required to undertake a more diverse array of courses and exhibit less specialization compared to the Plan A programs of study.
The prerequisites for Plan B consist of a minimum of 35 academic credits. Students are required to compile a portfolio showcasing the extent of their comprehension of Anthropology and their chosen field of expertise, determined in collaboration with their adviser. The final test includes a portfolio defense and other components of the academic program.
