Program description
The Master of Science in Geosciences program offers best-practices training for employment in key geoscience domains, and it is a common working degree for many energy, environmental, natural resource, regulatory, and other professional occupations. Each graduate student follows a specific schedule of courses and research designed with their adviser and graduate committee, which is reflected in their thesis. The program's strengths include diverse scientific specializations, an interdisciplinary approach to Earth resource education, professional networking and other preparation, global to local research topics reflecting the department's broad range of specializations, field research, and close student/faculty mentorship.
Faculty advise M.S. students in the department's diverse subdisciplines, which include geophysics, economic geology, environmental geology, geochemistry, geochronology, geodynamics, geomorphology, hydrogeology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, seismology, paleoclimatology, remote sensing, glaciology, stratigraphy, structural geology, and tectonics. Students collaborate with their adviser and the graduate committee to develop a program tailored to their academic interests and ambitions. Prospective students should contact department faculty mentors to explore their interests and create a program plan.
