Program structure
FIRST YEAR
In the first year, students will acquire foundational skills in design methods, progressing from research to concept development, and begin to apply what they have learned in modules like Product Design and Interior Design.
They will learn to express their ideas through sketching and drawing, 3D modelling and model making, and the practical creation of design experiments and prototypes.
Theoretical courses such as Visual Art and Contemporary Design will help them understand the design world and its role within the context of industry and society.
SECOND YEAR
At the beginning of the second year, students will deepen and expand their understanding of the design process while applying the knowledge gained in the previous year through courses like Service Design and Exhibition Design.
In the second semester, students will start to focus on their professional interests and inclinations through specialised track courses such as Furniture Design and Public Space Design, while further complementing their education with electives like Interactive Prototyping and Communication Design.
Concurrently, they will continue to develop their visual, digital, making, and interactive skills. The Design Criticism course will enhance their ability to adopt a critical mindset towards design decisions.
THIRD YEAR
The first semester of the final year focuses on the specialisation tracks, with design projects becoming increasingly specific and comprehensive.
Special attention will be given to the materials, processes, and technologies relevant to their respective specialisation courses, such as Value-Driven Design, Spatial Design, and Digital Product Design.
To further support the differentiation of student profiles, additional electives allow for deepening or complementing the chosen path. The Urban & Rural Anthropology course will introduce an understanding of cultural nuances and social dynamics, expanding on notions of human-centred design.
Throughout the year, students have the possibility to engage a project learning experience/internship. The final semester will be dedicated to the thesis project.

About the university

Early in the 1980s, Milan became a center for Italian fashion and design. Yet, no one in the city was teaching design in a formal way. In order to fill this void and guide the next generation of designers, prominent art critics and designers saw a unique opportunity. Domus Academy was established in 1982 as Italy's first graduate school of design.
The founders wanted to create a school where people from all walks of life could learn from and teach to each other. A university that combines cutting-edge research and forward-thinking initiatives with the goal of advancing the field of design.
