Program description
Art History has a renowned past as a study of cultural, social, and intellectual history in the Humanities. Works of art and architecture are physical artifacts that need to be appraised on their own merits and, concurrently, as reflections of the human experience. The Art History Major investigates the visual arts, both past and present, as modes of communication influenced by the physical, cultural, political, psychological, and/or economic conditions in which the piece of art or building was created. Our field seeks to comprehend works of art and architecture, as well as their significance on a variety of levels.
Advanced students are encouraged to get professional experience via internships at museums, galleries, and other art-related industries. The Art History Department may serve as a liaison to arrange internships at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses, major galleries, foundations, and regional centers. Course credit for such work must be obtained via the academic internship program.
