Program description
Women's and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that investigates the diverse experiences of women, men, gender non-conforming, trans, and non-binary people as shaped by class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, age, ability, social location, nationality, and cultural identity.
The curriculum is influenced by feminist theory and research on gender, racism, class, and sexuality from a number of disciplines and fields of study. The course helps students to analyze and critically challenge gender and its relationship to other social identities. The program also aims to encourage interactions between feminist academic knowledge and activist practice in order to achieve social justice in both the United States and the Global South, using a global/transnational feminist lens. These analytical and methodical abilities can be used to a second major, minor, or practically any professional sector. The program provides a major and a minor based on a selection of courses from other disciplines.
The degree involves an internship in a field of the student's choice to help them bridge theory and practice. WGST students interested in working in the non-profit sector might also pursue the Semester on Social Entrepreneurship.
After Drew, WGST majors go on to work in a variety of fields, including law, teaching, and medicine, as well as non-profit organizations that advocate for social justice. Majors often pursue graduate or professional studies in a variety of disciplines.
