Program description

The Master of Arts - Medical and Health Humanities Program is flexible, offering full- or part-time study. Starting in Fall 2020, certain courses will blend face-to-face and online study. All classes are late afternoon and early evening for working professionals.

Drew University's Caspersen School of Graduate Studies, Overlook Medical Center, RWJ Barnabas Health, and Morristown Medical Center of Atlantic Health Systems collaborate on the Medical and Health Humanities Program. The Program Director coordinates with the International Care Ethics Research Consortium and oversees the Art and Care Sessions and Platform.

Advanced Research

Medical and Health Humanities students excel in the investigation, interpretation, and presentation of relevant topics, contributing to human cognition and relationships. Masters students write theses.

Program Components

Courses in Biomedical and Care Ethics include health care challenges in practice and policy, including:

  • ethical and religious debates regarding abortion, death, and human experiments;
  • using ethical language in common care situations;
  • philosophical ideas like reliance, fragility, and precarity;
  • media and policy ethics interpretation.

Medical and care narratives courses teach how to “tell,” “read,” and analyze disease and well-being tales. Medical Narrative uses narrative, medical history, and case presentation to improve patient-provider communication.

Clinical Practica apply Medical Humanities philosophy to healthcare. Clinical rounds, clinical observation, and Bioethics Committee meetings are part of the practicum, which is tailored to each student. Therefore, the program collaborates with health care institutions like Atlantic Health System (Morristown Medical Center).
