Program description

The Gemmology program teaches you how to analyze and classify a wide range of gem materials, both natural and man-made.

The program focuses on analyzing the chemical and physical properties of gem and gemlike materials, as well as identifying various gems. The gem materials are classified into categories based on their desirable characteristics, which ultimately determine the gems' value. On real gem materials, you use a variety of specially designed instruments, such as microscopes, spectroscopes, refractometers, and polariscopes, to identify and classify them.

Visual acuity and color rendition accuracy are essential for success in gemmology.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
grade 12 English (C or U)

Basic computer literacy and skill level in Word and Excel are recommended.

George Brown English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program - Level 8;
IELTS (Academic) - 6.0, minimum 5.5 in each skill band;
TOEFL - 80 (online) minimum 20 in each skill band;
Duolingo English Test - 105;
MELAB - 80;
PTE (Academic) - 54, overall minimum, 50 in each skill band;
CAEL - 60 (overall);
Cambridge English Exams (B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) - 169 or more (with no individual skill below 162).
