Program description
Humber's Professional Writing and Communications graduate certificate program will assist you in learning and practicing the discipline of writing while developing a professional portfolio. This one-of-a-kind program teaches you the fundamental transferrable skills you'll need to succeed in a variety of communications roles. You will gain competency in areas such as media writing, social media management, project management, and design while building on core abilities such as narrative, drafting, editing, pitching, interviewing, and research.
You will be well-positioned to enter the workplace with the knowledge and skills required to succeed as a professional writer/communications specialist across a variety of sectors, with a focus on writing for different audiences and purposes, as well as using current technologies to maximize the impact of your message. You will also learn how to think strategically in order to take on leadership roles in communications departments or to start your own freelance writing business.
The program helps you locate a writing group and encourages collaboration, networking, professional development, and publishing.

Requirements for applicants
International Academic Equivalencies:
- A bachelor’s degree
- Please submit a one-page letter of intent (350 words) outlining your interest in this field of study. Your letter should express why you have an interest in professional writing and communications and in Humber's Professional Writing and Communications graduate certificate program.
For Indian applicants one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree placed in the First Division/Class, university transcripts (Consolidated Transcripts are Not Acceptable), and backlog summary
To be eligible for admission you must possess a bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma.
English Proficiency requirements are:
- A minimum TOEFL Academic Level score of 550 (paper based) or 80 (internet based) or
- an IELTS with an overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single band score below 5.5) or
- CAEL with an overall band score of 60 or
- Cambridge English Test with B2 First / C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 169 (with no single subscore below 162) or
- Duolingo Language Test with score 105 and above+
- International applicants may be asked to submit an ICAS or WES evaluation.
