Program description

Professionals can gain the skills they need to improve the social, cultural, and economic conditions in today's urban areas by taking advantage of the training offered by the Master of Creative Arts for the Urban Environment program.

This course explores the relationship between design and sustainable development, social inclusion as a means of empowering citizens to address societal concerns, governance, cooperation, e-democracy, open data and transparency, and the design of urban mobility and safety.

Because of the complexity of the problems plaguing cities today, inhabitants and administrators need the help of experts who can look back in time, assess the situation, and look ahead to the future to devise viable solutions.

Program structure

The teaching program is divided into one specific module and another common module, both compulsory and assessed.

The specific module develops professional specialisation.

  • Geographic, political, historical, cultural, social, and economic circumstances operate in metropolitan areas.

  • Identifying and analyzing the morphological and physical components of historical and existing cities to project futures around environment and landscape, mobility/accessibility, places, urban features and materials...
  • Coexistence, mediation, associations, safety and health, as well as features relating to services such as energy, sustainability, recycling, telecommunications, or management.
  • Tools to make strategic diagnoses on urban gaps and opportunities by learning methodologies to detect them and exercises to develop the capacity to discover and explain viable design solutions to solve deficits by taking advantage of opportunities.
  • Tools for preparing design proposals by anticipating non-viability concerns and being aware of complexity vectors related to context singularity, actor multiplicity and heterogeneity, and project timelines and uncertainties.
  • Tools to conduct work as a positive element in the complex mechanisms of modern urban environment governance, knowing the role and functions that correspond to designers at each step of the projects in which they are participating, both as part of teams and in connection to other actors involved, with the ability to mediate and create acceptable content for each stage and team.
  • Tools to construct fair, appropriate, new/updated, distinct, and better urban environments.

The common module is shared by all Master’s degree courses because they lay the groundwork of a common culture for the entire IED Barcelona community.

The challenge-based learning paradigm is overseen by a subject-specialist educator. Subjects may be taught online, in a hybrid manner, or face-to-face, depending on their content.

About the university

Since 1966, we have been the largest Higher Education Network in the creative area to keep both a worldwide perspective and a strongly Italian cultural matrix.

Our educational strategy has evolved over time, but at its core remains the same: we mix theoretical study with hands-on experience and the expertise of working experts. One of the things we emphasize in our classes is always thinking ahead, in the here and now. We are a diverse, multidisciplinary institution that views design as a tool for social transformation.

Among the many international academic networks in which we participate are Cumulus, Elia, and WDO, just to name a few.

Campuses

In the 1970s and 1980s, we expanded to Rome (1973), Cagliari (1984), and Turin (1989) in Italy.

Beginning in 1994 with the Madrid campus and continuing on to Barcelona in 2002, Spain's modern era began in the 1990s.

The Group also spread internationally, establishing a presence in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2005, and then in Venice, Italy, in 2007, Florence, Italy, in 2009, and Como, Italy, in 2009, with the acquisition of the Aldo Galli Academy of Fine Arts. The Group expanded its footprint in Brazil in 2014 by renovating the Cassino da Urca and opening a campus in Rio de Janeiro; in 2020, the Group will expand its presence in Spain by purchasing the Centro Superior de Diseo Kunsthal in Bilbao.
