Program description

Memorial's oil and gas engineering programme is a one-of-a-kind curriculum that concentrates on offshore oil and gas operations in difficult climatic conditions. Our programme is designed to provide solutions to future issues in producing oil and gas in more remote and extreme areas, such as the Arctic and deep sea.

Our curriculum focuses oil and gas operations safety and risk management through basic courses in safety and risk management as well as offshore environmental management.

Our programme is multidisciplinary, with professors specialising in electrical engineering, reservoir engineering, drilling engineering, environmental engineering, safety and risk engineering, and process engineering.

Program structure

Memorial University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers thesis-based graduate programmes leading to master of engineering (MEng) degree in oil and gas engineering, as well as allied subjects such as:

  • operations for offshore oil and gas
  • management of safety, risk, and the environment
  • reservoir construction
  • engineering for drilling
  • improved oil recovery
  • engineering of natural gas (with a concentration on unconventional developments)
  • asset integrity administration
  • undersea network
  • instrumentation and control

Degree Requirements

The MEng program normally takes two years to complete and students are required to complete at least four courses, a seminar course and a thesis.

Requirements for applicants

To be considered for admission to a MEng program, the minimum requirements will normally be a second-class degree in an appropriate area of study from a university of recognized standing.

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
