About the university

Memorial University has a unique responsibility to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as the only university in the province. Memorial University was founded as a tribute to the Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in military duty during globe War I and later conflicts. We take inspiration from their efforts to create a better future for our province, our country, and the globe.

Research

Ocean studies account for about 40% of research at Memorial (68% in the Faculty of Science alone). There is a good chance that Memorial University is participating in any research being conducted in the North Atlantic. In reality, Memorial is involved with the Ocean Frontier Institute, a $220 million joint research project that aims to tap the ocean's untapped potential. As a private sector-led partnership, Canada's Ocean Supercluster aims to boost sustainable economic growth from the seas by fostering innovation and commercialization. More than $130 million was allocated to research at Memorial University in 2019–20, placing it in the top 20 research universities in Canada. More than 1,500 graduate fellowships and 854 PhD students attest to Memorial and its financial partners' longstanding commitment to investing in bright students.

Sixty-four Memorial researchers were in the top two percent of scientists in the world in 2020. 

Honors and Awards

Numerous faculty members at Memorial have been honored for their significant contributions to society with honors and accolades. A few examples of national and international awards that show Memorial's status as a world-class research institution include the Arctic Inspiration Prize, SSHRC Impact Awards (including the Gold Medal and Insight Award), the Governor General's Innovation Award (2018 and 2019), and the United Nations' Climate Solution Award.

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship is one of the world's top five emerging entrepreneurship centers, and Memorial University was just voted the top challenger in North America by University Business Incubators.
