Program description

The Department of Ocean Sciences has around 60 graduate students and 13 full-time, 2 Emeritus, 1 Honorary, and 2 cross-appointed academic members. Approximately 12 researchers from outside the university hold adjunct posts with the Department and contribute to the graduate programme as co-supervisors and supervisory committee members, many of whom work in government laboratories (agricultural, fishery, forestry, wildlife). The Department's strategic purpose is to provide high-quality educational and training opportunities, particularly at the graduate level. Our graduate students conduct research in physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, as well as biological and chemical oceanography, behavioural and population ecology, and aquaculture and fisheries.

Program structure

The PhD programme consists of courses, a thorough test, and a thesis that can be finished in four years of full-time study.

Requirements for applicants

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
