Program description
Memorial University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers thesis-based graduate programmes leading to doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees in Civil Engineering, as well as related multidisciplinary fields such as mechanics, structures, and materials, and hydrotechnical and environmental engineering and applied science.
Graduate students in civil engineering can also use specialised facilities such as a strength and concrete laboratory and a structural laboratory with a one-metre-thick concrete floor for static and dynamic testing; a hydraulic laboratory with a 58-metre wave/towing tank; environmental laboratories; a soil simulator; two wave/soil interaction tanks and a deep tank for acoustic work; an ice structures laboratory with cold rooms and specialised testing equipment; and an in-house laboratory.

Degree Requirements
The PhD program usually takes three to four years to complete and comprises two courses beyond the master's level, completion of comprehensive examinations and a significant research thesis.

Requirements for applicants
- Master's degree from a university of recognized standing, in an appropriate area of study
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
