Program description

Memorial University's Marine Institute offers two (2) degree choices in Maritime Studies.

The Master of Science in Maritime Studies (Safety: The Human Element) is a research-focused Master's degree that can be pursued full- or part-time. This programme is designed for students who have exhibited a commitment to safety and survival. It focuses on skill development to prepare students to undertake high-quality research in the safety and survival elements of marine studies.

Full-time and part-time students can pursue the Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime Studies. This programme is designed for those who desire to help generate new maritime studies expertise in the field of safety and survival. Researchers will be armed with a skill set that is both nationally and internationally sought after, focusing on statistics and study design, quantitative analysis, science communication, and awareness of human aspects that influence safety and survival in maritime contexts.

Program structure

Courses, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis are all part of the PhD programme. The programme is four years long and can be completed in four years of full-time study.

Requirements for applicants

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
