Program description
Memorial University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers thesis-based graduate programmes leading to master of engineering (MEng) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering, as well as related fields such as hydrodynamics, marine structures, underwater vehicles, and ocean environmental engineering.
Memorial University's Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering programme is the only one in Canada. It is well-known for its innovative approach, various research programmes, and outstanding faculty, which includes top researchers. Graduate students have access to a 58-meter towing tank as well as a constructions laboratory equipped with cold chambers and specialised testing equipment, as well as chances for field work and graduate research projects. The Ocean Engineering Research Centre (OERC) of Memorial University, which is part of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, conducts research, development, and consultation in most areas of ocean engineering, including the offshore petroleum and shipping industries. The OERC's efforts include scale model experiments, numerical modelling, software development, and structural testing.

Requirements for applicants
Degree Requirements
The PhD program usually takes three to four years to complete and comprises two courses beyond the master's level, completion of comprehensive examinations and a significant research thesis.
To be considered for admission to a PhD program, the minimum requirements will normally be a Master's degree from a university of recognized standing, in an appropriate area of study.
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
