Program description
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University is one of the institution's youngest - half of our faculty were hired since 2005 - and most prestigious - 20% of us hold the university's top rank, University Research Professor. Although the Department of Mathematics and Statistics has offered graduate degrees for many years, there has been a surge in interest in these programmes over the last decade, adding valuable new voices to the Department's community of academics.
Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computation, Analysis, Combinatorics, Topology, Applied Statistics, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Models and Modeling / Numerical Optimization, Algebra, Mathematical Physics, Mathematical Statistics, and Fluid Mechanics are among the research areas studied by our faculty and graduate students.
Graduate courses, a two-part comprehensive examination, and a thesis including the results of high-quality original research comprise the PhD programmes in Mathematics and Statistics. Students should be able to finish the PhD requirements in three to four years. Following the completion of the thesis, a final oral examination and thesis defence must take place.

Requirements for applicants
- Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
