Program description

Memorial University of Newfoundland's Faculty of Medicine, one of 17 Canadian medical schools, was founded in 1967. The Faculty is located in the Medical Education Centre, which is adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's. The Medical Education Centre is a modern facility that also houses the adult and women's hospitals, the Janeway Children's Hospital, and the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, as well as specialised units and support services.

The graduate programmes in the Faculty of Medicine are designed to foster an academic environment conducive to success in research training. The programmes are intended to provide both formal education and informal exchange in the field of health research. Graduate studies in the Faculty of Medicine are divided into ten areas of concentration: Applied Health Services Research, Cancer and Development, Cardiovascular and Renal Sciences, Clinical Epidemiology, Community Health, Human Genetics, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Neurosciences, Public Health, and Health Ethics.

These initiatives are based on the Faculty's focal areas of health research and rely on a critical mass of actively engaged faculty researchers in these areas. Each focus has a programme coordinator and a core of graduate courses relevant to the field of health research, as well as channels for formal and informal sharing of research ideas (journal clubs, seminar series, visiting speakers program).

The MSc (Med) curriculum consists of courses as well as a thesis. It is possible to complete it in two years of full-time study.

Requirements for applicants

Bachelor's degree (minimum second class) in an appropriate area of study

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
Please note that other equivalent tests acceptable to Memorial University’s School of Graduate Studies will also be considered.
