Program description
Sociology seeks to comprehend patterns of human social life in all of their historical and contemporary diversity: how individuals live, think, feel, believe, and behave, in comparison to other societies. The Department of Sociology at Memorial University is the largest in Atlantic Canada, with specialties in social theory, criminology and deviance, environmental sociology, social inequality, gender, sexuality, development, work, culture, and health, including occupational health, political sociology, and maritime sociology. Faculty research focuses on communities and social concerns in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and around the world, and is regularly supported by SSHRC, CIHR, and other funding sources.
The PhD programme consists of classes, study preparation and the writing of a comprehensive exam, the development and oral defence of a dissertation proposal, the collecting and analysis of research data, the writing of a dissertation, and the final oral defence of the dissertation. This procedure usually necessitates at least four years of full-time education.
