Program description

Memorial University's MSc in Scientific Computing programme was one of the earliest in North America and is still the only one in Atlantic Canada. Scientific Computing currently offers both MSc and PhD programmes. These programmes teach students advanced computational tools and how to apply them to at least one scientific field, such as Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Physics, or Physical Oceanography. Students can expect to gain knowledge and experience in the following areas: (1) cutting-edge numerical methods, (2) high performance computer architectures, (3) parallel and vector software development tools, (4) graphics, visualisation, and multimedia tools, and (5) acquisition, processing, and analysis of large experimental data sets.

The MSc and PhD programmes in Scientific Computing are interdisciplinary, drawing on the experience of faculty members from a variety of academic areas. Researchers from outside organisations participate by co-supervising students, offering co-op placements, computing resources, and teaching some courses. The initiative is closely linked to ACEnet, the Atlantic Canada Excellence network of high-performance computers where much of our computational work is performed.

Program structure

The PhD programme is a thesis-based programme with full-time and part-time options. The programme is intended to generate effective researchers in Scientific Computing and related applied fields. Courses in the programme are meant to provide enhanced mastery of key Scientific Computing ideas.

Requirements for applicants

Master’s degree in Scientific Computing or in appropriate discipline. In exceptional cases, a thesis-based Honours BSc degree may be considered

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
