Program description

The histories of mathematics and physics are inextricably linked, with many significant discoveries in each made by scientists who worked in both fields. Indeed, the disciplines have cross-pollinated throughout history. Existing mathematics has frequently proven to be "unreasonably effective" in representing reality, whereas efforts to describe and explain physical processes have frequently resulted in the formation of new mathematics. Today, as each discipline advances and grows, the two fields are more different, yet they remain two of the most closely related sciences. Students interested in working at this interface are encouraged to pursue an Interdisciplinary PhD in Theoretical Physics. It is broad in scope and comprises various subdisciplines that share the common denominator of using advanced mathematical approaches to examine physical problems. These include, but are not limited to, advanced classical mechanics and non-linear processes, classical and quantum field theory, general relativity, many-body theory, mathematical physics partial differential equations, quantum mechanics, theoretical astrophysics, theoretical condensed matter physics, and theoretical and geophysical fluid mechanics.

The PhD programme in Theoretical Physics consists of courses, a comprehensive test, and a thesis. It usually takes four years of full-time education to finish.

Program structure

A program of study for the Ph.D. Degree in Theoretical Physics shall normally include a minimum of 9 graduate credit hours in courses offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and/or the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography.
Students are required to pass a single Comprehensive Examination as prescribed under Comprehensive Examinations, Ph.D. Comprehensive Examination. This shall be an oral one, and may include the presentation of a written research proposal.
The most important requirement is the writing of a doctoral thesis which demonstrates the student’s ability to independently and originally attack and solve a significant problem in theoretical physics. The thesis must definitively advance the subject which it treats.

Requirements for applicants

Master's degree in an appropriate area of study

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
