Program description
The curriculum is designed to give a blend of conceptual/theoretical knowledge and practical applied skills. As a result, students will gain a broad understanding of planning processes as well as the governance, policy/legislative, ecological, social, cultural, and economic aspects of coastal and ocean areas, as well as practical and applied skills for stakeholder engagement, project management, and the use of geospatial technology to support planning efforts. Courses will be arranged throughout the programme to teach theoretical concepts and then investigate real-world examples of their implementation.
Students will take seven core courses, an internship or research project, and one of two optional course options.

Requirements for applicants
Admission to the program is on a limited and competitive basis.
To be considered for admission to the program, an applicant will normally possess a relevant second class or better undergraduate degree from a university of recognized standing.
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
- Please note that other equivalent tests acceptable to Memorial University’s School of Graduate Studies will also be considered.
