Program description
The Master of Gender Studies degree allows students to critically analyse how gender impacts our identities, social interactions, and world at an advanced level. Students will integrate frameworks for thinking about power relations and how those ties are shaped and challenged by intersecting constructs of gender, racism, class, sexuality, age, ability, and nationality into their studies.
Citizenship and human rights; corporeal feminism; reproductive rights; auto/biography and life writing; postcolonial and transnational feminisms; and First Nations studies are among the research interests and expertise of faculty members in the Department of Gender Studies. This interdisciplinary master's programme provides a vibrant atmosphere that draws on the experience of academics from a variety of areas. All MGS students have access to interdisciplinary resources in related fields.
The Master of Gender Studies addresses the need for a more in-depth understanding of women and gender in society, and students may investigate a variety of topics, including but not limited to everyday experiences, social and political institutions, literary and philosophical contributions, and past and present events and issues. Students may also create practical and policy efforts to advance equality and social justice. The master's degree can be obtained through full-time or part-time study, as well as through thesis or non-thesis (project/internship) programmes. Students can benefit from the experience of faculty members from a variety of academic fields and divisions.

Requirements for applicants
- Bachelor's degree (minimum second class honours) in an appropriate area of study; applicants may be required to completed one or more undergraduate course(s).
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
