Program description
Memorial University of Newfoundland's Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography has a well-established graduate studies programme that is supported by a strong research tradition. Since the beginning of graduate studies at Memorial in 1960, the Department has offered MSc degrees, and its first PhD programme was established in 1969. Our students are now overseen by teachers with international expertise, connections, and recognition. NSERC, the CFI, and other organisations generously sponsor our research projects. Our laboratories and computer facilities are set up to provide students with world-class research possibilities.
Theoretical, computational, experimental, and observational investigations of planetary fluid dynamics, glacial ice sheet dynamics, acoustic observation methods, instrument development, and global climate modelling are among the research prospects in physical oceanography. Condensed matter physics research is divided into three broad categories: hard condensed matter, which involves solids with high melting points, ultra-low temperatures, and quantum mechanical effects; soft condensed matter, which involves liquids, colloids and polymers, proteins, lipids, viruses, and cells; and applied physics, which involves sensors and photonics.
Other physics research areas include particle physics and black hole physics.
