Program description

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University offers thesis-based graduate programme leading to doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees in process engineering. The programmes' concentration is on study areas in processing and utilising various natural resources to manufacture all types of high-value added products in a safe and sustainable manner.

Specifically, research in the Department of Process Engineering at Memorial focuses on the chemical and biochemical conversion of natural resources (forestry, food processing, oil and gas, and mineral industries) into useful intermediate industrial chemicals and, ultimately, end products; green recovery of valuable metals from low grade ores; contaminant removal (desulfurization, deoxygentation, etc.) from solid fuels, crude oil, and natural gas; and modelling, design, and simulation.

Program structure

The PhD program usually takes three to four years to complete and comprises two courses beyond the master's level, completion of comprehensive examinations and a significant research thesis.

Process engineering research is being conducted in the following areas:

  • process design and development to convert waste to biofuels and bioproducts
  • safety and risk engineering
  • biochemical conversion processes
  • sustainability engineering
  • waste to energy
