Program description

The English Department is a vibrant and productive community of 23 full-time faculty members engaged in active research programmes, graduate supervision, and literary scholarship and creative writing publication.

The ten research clusters listed below indicate specific concentrations of strength and emphasis, and can help you connect with faculty members working in those areas: American, Canadian, Colonial and Postcolonial, Creative, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, Environmental and Energy Humanities, Medieval and Early Modern, Newfoundland and Labrador, North Atlantic, and Visual Narrative Studies are some of the topics covered. Requirements for applicants

Bachelor's degree (minimum second class honours) in English or equivalent, with 20 courses in English and minimum 80% in English courses

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
