Program description
The Department of Ocean Sciences has around 60 graduate students and 13 full-time, 2 Emeritus, 1 Honorary, and 2 cross-appointed academic members. Approximately 12 researchers from outside the university hold adjunct posts with the Department and contribute to the graduate programme as co-supervisors and supervisory committee members, many of whom work in government laboratories (agricultural, fishery, forestry, wildlife). The Department's strategic purpose is to provide high-quality educational and training opportunities, particularly at the graduate level. Our graduate students conduct research in physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, as well as biological and chemical oceanography, behavioural and population ecology, and aquaculture and fisheries.
The MSc curriculum consists of courses and a thesis that can be finished in two years of full-time study.

Requirements for applicants
Students admitted to the M.Sc. Marine Biology program normally hold a biology B.Sc. (Honours) degree (or equivalent) with at least high second-class standing. All students are encouraged to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test and/or the one for Biology Students.
Acceptance for the Marine Biology graduate program depends on two other criteria apart from grades and educational background:
- Ocean Sciences faculty member must agree to supervise the student. Applicants for graduate school therefore must have corresponded and made prior arrangements with one or more faculty members who are willing to
- be the applicant’s graduate supervisor and
- provide research and personal support.
- adequate funds must be available for both personal and research support. The minimal level of personal support is set by the Ocean Sciences Graduate Studies Committee.
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
- Please note that other equivalent tests acceptable to Memorial University’s School of Graduate Studies will also be considered.
