Program description

Since its foundation in 1963, Memorial University's School of Social Work has evolved to become the largest east of Montreal, and its MSW and PhD programmes are taught by an internationally acclaimed faculty. Memorial University's PhD in Social Work programme is the only one in Atlantic Canada. The School promotes social justice via social work education, scientific investigation, knowledge dissemination, and contributions to public policy and practise. These initiatives contribute to meeting the needs and aspirations of the local and global communities with which we engage and interact. The School of Social Work is critical in training graduates for service delivery in Newfoundland and Labrador, throughout Canada, and around the world.

The MSW programme focuses on innovative methods to critical thinking for leaders in a variety of social work settings. There are thesis and course alternatives available.

Requirements for applicants

  • Bachelor's degree (minimum second class) in Social Work and two years post-bachelor’s experience

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
