Program description
Students in NYFA's Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Game Design program learn the fundamentals of video game art, technology, design, narrative storytelling, and business. Students learn about the major aspects that comprise video game genres and how to successfully use them to develop a successful game via hands-on, project-based learning.
Students learn how to engage and immerse players in a gameplay experience under the supervision of professional game designers, laying the groundwork for a solid foundation in playable system design, game writing, playcentric design, systems literacy, narrative design, original play mechanics, game analysis, and 3D art.
Students will produce a playable, portfolio-ready game each semester utilizing industry best practices such as Agile and Scrum. By the end of the BFA, students will have a portfolio of their finest work that showcases their developing creative and technical abilities.
Program structure
Throughout the curriculum, students attend advanced classes and practical workshops that teach them how to dissect any gaming experience. Students also study about game design, playtesting, iteration, presentation, and cooperation, as well as the important characteristics that distinguish different video game genres. Students practice writing code, developing graphic assets, and game animations, as well as how they influence the design and production process of games.
