Program description
NYFA's Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Photography offers students a solid foundation in commercial, fine art, fashion, and documentary photography. Throughout the program, students study a variety of academically difficult photography subjects to push their creativity, as well as liberal arts courses to provide a well-rounded education.
Students' creativity is carefully and continuously cultivated as they are encouraged to discover and build their own distinct visual language and vocabulary via a process of inquiry, criticism, creative conceptualization, self-reflection, and practice.
Students pursuing a BFA in Photography at NYFA Los Angeles are encouraged to be their most creative selves by their classmates and professors. This program aims to provide students with creative, technical, and business abilities that will enable them seek a career in this fascinating sector.
Program structure
The first two semesters of the BFA in Photography program include basic, technical, and historical topics. During semesters three through eight, students are able to choose the courses that are most appropriate for them. The BFA program takes this approach and provides a curriculum that allows NYFA students to explore their favorite photography style, which includes:
- Technical, theoretical, and artistic courses vary each semester, but may include Deconstructing the Body. Discovering the New Beautiful in Fashion, Photography, and Social Media: Breaking Through The Gram, Graphics and Social Movements, and Truth and Fiction in Photoshop.
- Critical Film Studies and History and Aesthetics of Photography are examples of liberal arts and arts and humanities courses that are relevant to photography.
- Faculty and personnel with expertise in commercial and fine art photography.
- Hands-on experience working with professional photo equipment in our photo studio, as well as access to NYFA's world-class camera and lighting kit collection.
- Ongoing guest lectures by notable photographers, curators, and artist representatives.

New York Film Academy, known as NYFA, was founded in 1992 by Jerry Sherlock, the executive producer of The Hunt for Red October (1990), as a substitute for conventional university-affiliated film schools.
