Program description
The NYFA's Master of Fine Arts (MFA) - 3D Animation and VFX is a rigorous visual storytelling practicum in which students develop creative leadership skills in a variety of cinematic and new arts disciplines. MFA students learn from faculty who bring knowledge and experience from major brands such as Disney, Dreamworks, Universal, and Netflix. They master the tools and techniques to create compelling 3D Animation and VFX shots while cultivating a deep sense of service to storytelling, culminating in their final thesis.
To hone their creative and technical talents, students work on hands-on projects unique to our MFA in 3D animation, such as Technical Direction, Motion Capture and Motion Data, and Previs demo reels. At the master's level, NYFA successfully delivers a hybrid learning curriculum to students aspiring to be pioneers in 3D Animation, VFX, Computer Imaging, Feature Film, Television, New and Emerging Media, Research and Development, and the Interactive and Game Industries. Students exit the program with a demo reel showcasing their ability and advanced skill sets.
Program structure
The MFA 3D Animation and VFX School provides students the practical, technical, and creative abilities needed to bring CG-enhanced storytelling to life.
Throughout the curriculum, students will:
- Develop a solid technical grasp of the animation and visual effects process and pipeline
- Examine and identify industry trends in Pre-Production/Preparation of Animation and VFX
- Develop their skills in intermediate and advanced digital element creation, motion capture, animation, interactive games, stereoscopic 3D, post-production/image manipulation, and data acquisition and capture organization
- Study in professional facilities using cutting-edge equipment, gaining extensive training with industry standard software, which may include Autodesk's 3D Maya, MotionBuilder, Pixologic's ZBrush digital sculptor, SideFX's Houdini FX, Chaos Group's V-Ray, and Foundry's Nuke compositing and editing program
