Program description
This Master's program takes a comprehensive approach to modern interior design, emphasizing sustainability and paying close attention to materials and manufacturing techniques.
This Master's course challenges the great tradition of Italian interior design with contemporary and upcoming global challenges, all with the goal of creating "relational spaces," or environments and places that promote harmonious connections between people, living things, and objects.
Our modules cover the basics of interior design, from concept design to spatial composition to furniture design, covering theory and practice in materials, lighting, color, furniture, and technical components to give students a complete set of current skills.
Collaboration with companies and institutions propels students to develop a conceptual approach and strategic understanding of interior design creative processes, giving them valuable insights into how interiors can communicate brand values to the market.
Technical representation and attention to architectural details help students enhance their design suggestions and strengthen their professional skills as interior designers.
Program structure
- Elements of Space-Making
- The first part, “Ordinary,” aims to teach students the standard elements for designing interior space, providing them with a basic grammar.
- The second part, “Extra-Ordinary”, aims to challenge the standard tools learned in the previous module, encouraging students to “go beyond” the predefined solutions.
- Perceiving the Space
- The purpose of this module is to explore space using all senses, with a focus on light and materials. The final assignment centres on producing the physical model of an intimate space for themselves.
- Devices
- Through a combination of theoretical concepts and practical exercises, this module analyses the dimensional and ergonomic aspects of furniture. The final assignment focuses on the detailed design of a furniture piece, conceived as a living machine, with the production of technical drawings, physical models, and material palettes.
- Habitats
- The field of application is a real and tangible space located in Milan. Students can experiment with the relationship between existing space and new function, between pre-existing elements and contemporary integration. Collaborations and synergies with companies are activated, providing real project briefs to allow students to investigate and experiment with different typologies of interior design (food, living, hospitality, offices, etc.) and gain hands-on experience.
- Major Project
- Develop your own design research under the guidance of the Course Leader
You can choose a two-year program that includes an internship with external institutions and companies, an internal research internship, or a period of study abroad.
Price
The tuition fee is 15,600 EUR.
If you choose a two-year program with an internship - the cost for the second year is 11,600 EUR.
Requirements for applicants
- To be admitted into the MA course, students must have a second class (2.2) honours or higher in art, design, or other creative disciplines from any recognised ISCED level 6 programme. Graduates in scientific disciplines, social sciences, and humanities can also be selected, as well as candidates who have previously gained significant professional experience in the field of the Master selected.
- SPD also considers other relevant experience and/or the attendance of SPD Preparatory Courses. In addition, international students need an IELTS score of 6.0, with no component below 5.5.
About the university
Founded in Milan in 1954, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first school in Italy dedicated to design disciplines.
Thanks to the mix of its Italian roots and strong international orientation, SPD is now an international laboratory for sharing experiences and creating initiatives by maintaining a balance between function and expression, production and experimentation. This immensely fulfilling conversation with businesses, manufacturers, and the other players along the design chain is also demonstrated by the innovative work produced each year and the young professionals the school is able to give to the market.
Mission
At SPD, being creative is a daily task. It has accepted an amazing community of students from all nations and backgrounds ever since its founding in 1954. Everyone has an unparalleled opportunity: they collaborate with top-notch professionals, converse with numerous academic partners, and exchange experiences with emerging talent from across the globe.
All of this occurs in Milan, a city with a rich and easily accessible legacy of design and architecture, business and industry, communication, and the arts.
