Program description
The Product Design Master program encourages you to conceive and actualize products that consistently integrate with the real world, preferring tangible over speculative design and proposing a dialogue between your creations and the social and cultural environment. This approach spans from mass production to self-made production.
Concurrently, the curriculum provides the learner with essential information and abilities, ranging from appreciating raw materials and manufacturing procedures to becoming proficient in handicraft methods.
The essential business skills are interwoven, enabling you to not only address the engineering and financial aspects of self-production, but also to navigate the complete product creation cycle from initial ideation to the finished piece.
Program structure
- Mass Production
- Learn to design a mass product by articulating its quality aspects, balancing functional, physical, technical, aesthetic-formal, and communicative characteristics.

About the university
Founded in Milan in 1954, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first school in Italy dedicated to design disciplines.
Thanks to the mix of its Italian roots and strong international orientation, SPD is now an international laboratory for sharing experiences and creating initiatives by maintaining a balance between function and expression, production and experimentation. This immensely fulfilling conversation with businesses, manufacturers, and the other players along the design chain is also demonstrated by the innovative work produced each year and the young professionals the school is able to give to the market.
Mission
At SPD, being creative is a daily task. It has accepted an amazing community of students from all nations and backgrounds ever since its founding in 1954. Everyone has an unparalleled opportunity: they collaborate with top-notch professionals, converse with numerous academic partners, and exchange experiences with emerging talent from across the globe.
All of this occurs in Milan, a city with a rich and easily accessible legacy of design and architecture, business and industry, communication, and the arts.
Awards
The school has had a very successful history, marked by remarkable recognition. It can be proud of its exhibitions at the Carrousel du Louvre, the Biennale di Venezia in 1986, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Medaglia d'Oro at the tenth Triennale in Milan, and even the Compasso d'Oro awarded by the ADI - Associazione Disegno Industriale in 1994. Not to mention the honor of receiving the SMAU prize for Industrial Design twice.
