Getting a BFA in Communication Design prepares you for a future that satisfies your unique creative passions, whether that be designing trademarks, websites, packaging, social media content, or advertising for national brands, educating the public about societal and health issues, or developing digital products and software solutions that address challenging business problems.Program structure
Minimum required: 120 semester credit hours
In addition to their general studies, art foundations, art history, and art and design electives, students pursuing a BFA in Communication Design undertake a demanding course of study within their major. Four specialized courses are available in the Communication Design Program, which provide the groundwork for preparing students for further study. With an emphasis on empowering students to become exceptional critical thinkers, courageous creators, and proficient communicators as they enter the professional area of communication design, this curriculum culminates in the creation of an exceptional portfolio. Students are prepared for professional practice with courses in interactive design, typography, art direction, corporate identity, sustainable packaging, brand experience, human-centered design, environmental graphics, and design research. Professional internships, job shadowing, and independent study courses are ways for students to advance their education.
The classroom setting for the Communication Design courses is a studio. The Mitte Complex features a multidisciplinary innovation lab with a laser cutter, CNC router, 3D printer, and die cutter, as well as Macintosh labs, an open lab for student usage, digital color printing capabilities including RISO, digital still and video camera checkout, and a photographic studio.
