Program description

Students enrolled in the Public Relations (B.S.) degree are prepared to fulfill jobs that involve managing communication across all media platforms.  The curriculum emphasizes research, innovation, and problem resolution using the highest legal and ethical standards and strategic and creative thinking in a varied and global society.  In addition to internships in Texas and major American cities, students can hone their abilities at Bobcat PRomotions, the student-run public relations firm.

Program structure

Minimum required: 120 semester credit hours

Competency Area 1 choose 9 hours from the following:

  • Introduction to Mass Communication
  • Introduction to Public Relations
  • Advertising

Competency Area 2 choose 3 hours from the following:

  • Media Writing
  • Writing for the Electronic Media
  • Video Production
  • News Writing and Reporting I
  • Editing and Managing Content
  • Photojournalism

All students in this degree program must earn a "C" or higher in each of three core courses in Mass Communication, which include:

  • Introduction to Mass Communication
  • Media Law and Ethics
  • Fundamentals of Digital and Online Media

All students in this degree program must earn a "C" or higher in all prerequisite courses and in the following major courses:

  • Introduction to Public Relations
  • Foundations of Public Relations Writing
  • Social Media for Strategic Communication
  • Public Relations Research
  • Advanced Writing for Public Relations
  • Public Relations Campaigns

Requirements for applicants

  • Any student admitted to Texas State University with an overall GPA of at least a 2.25 and a ā€œCā€ or higher in MC 1301 will automatically be admitted to their selected major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. If a student does not meet these requirements upon admission, they will be temporarily classified as a pre-major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. As soon as the student meets any missing requirements, they will be admitted to their selected major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

  • an overall competitive GPA or a competitive GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)
  • at least 90 credit hours of undergraduate course work

English language requirements

  • TOEFL iBT scores required with a 78 overall and minimum individual module scores of 19 listening, 19 reading, 19 speaking, 18 writing
  • official PTE scores required with a 52 overall
  • official IELTS (academic) scores required with a 6.5 overall and minimum individual module scores of 6.0
  • official Duolingo scores with a 110 overall
