Program description
This four-year degree offers two specialization options:
- Studies in Communication and New Media
- Transmission and Public Relations
Although there is some overlap in fundamental courses, the lower and upper level requirements for the two streams are distinct.
Studies in Communication and New Media
This stream focuses on the aesthetic, narrative, and theoretical aspects of technology, in addition to computer-mediated communication. This program is for those who are interested in how technology, design, and business interact.
This stream will help you comprehend the relationship between "new" media forms and practices and "old" media forms and practices. You will be able to predict developments in new media and the genres and other patterns they manifest, such as story and play in computer games; community, conversation, and interpersonal communication with smartphones and social software; and the manner in which charisma, character, and identity are communicated across a variety of media.
Communication and Public Relations
This stream is concerned with the commercial and practical applications of communication. If you have aspirations in business, tourism, entrepreneurship, or public service, this program will demonstrate how communication can improve your business practices. Close connections with the Tourism and Business faculties will prepare you for a variety of business and event planning scenarios. There is no comparable program in the Kamloops area.
This program provides graduates with a foundation in communication history and theory, a wealth of meaning-making skills (image-based, language-based, etc), marketing knowledge, and event planning skills. The communication courses provide instruction in communication design strategies and the pragmatic application of theory. Public relations graduates should be well-rounded professionals who are prepared to enter either the public or private sectors.
