Program description

The two-year Bachelor of Education (Elementary) curriculum combines classroom instruction with practical experiences that are centered around elementary school.

After graduating, you may work in elementary education or, if you have more experience, secondary education. The BC Teacher Certification Branch grants you a professional teaching credential that enables you to work as an elementary school teacher in any type of school, including public, private, independent, religious, and First Nations.

  • Tuition —  8,861 CAD/semester (up to 12 credits)
  • Application Fees — 100 CAD (one time, non-refundable)
  • General Fees — 553 CAD (per semester for 12 credits)
  • Health Fees — 75 CAD (per month)
  • TRUSU Extended Heath & Dental Plan — 248 CAD (per year)

Requirements for applicants

Education Requirements:

  • 30 credits of general course work in areas related to the B.C. elementary curriculum and must include:
    • Six credits of course work in English or French literature and composition with at least 3 credits in English literature
    • Three credits of Canadian studies (e.g., history or geography)
    • Three credits of mathematics (not statistics)
    • Three credits of science (in the fields of astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, earth science and/or ocean science, physics or physical geography)
  • 30 academic credits (in any variety of subjects)
  • A minimum GPA of 2.67 is required for consideration
  • All required coursework needed to meet admission requirements must be completed by the end of winter semester of the year in which application to the program is made. All final grades must be entered to your student record by May 15 in order for you to be eligible to participate in the Fall intake.

Other Requirements:

  • We recommend a minimum of 15 hours of relevant experience with groups of school-aged children. If applicable, this experience should be described in the supplementary form provided.
  • Application Questionnaire. In this online questionnaire you will respond to specific questions your motivation, relevant experiences, and values to make you a good candidate to become a teacher.
  • Two confidential reference report forms from referees qualified to attest to an applicant's suitability for teaching, preferably from teachers and not from a relative or close friend.

Oral and Written English Requirement:

A candidate may be asked to complete an oral and/or written task to assess English language as an admission requirement or at any time during the program. A student may be asked as needed to undertake remedial work in oral and/or written English language to support student success.
