Program description

Learn the skills required for a fulfilling career as a generalist social work practitioner in a variety of settings, including child welfare, mental health, addictions, women's services, family justice, corrections, health, and Indigenous people. The BSW programme is oriented towards social justice, diversity, and societal transformation. The programme provides students with a nationally recognised degree that prepares them for a job as a professional social worker. The degree is intended to expand on the educational accomplishments and experiences of a diverse group of students.

The BSW program at TRU offers a specialization in child welfare. During their BSW program, students must take specific courses and complete a child welfare practicum in order to graduate with a transcript notation indicating successful completion of the Child Welfare Specialization. Students who intend to work in mandated child protection contexts after graduation are required to complete their practicum with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) or a delegated Indigenous agency.

Students who desire to specialize in child welfare but do not intend to work in mandated child protection settings after graduation may complete their fourth-year practicum with at-risk children, adolescents, and families in a non-delegated child welfare setting.

The BSW program is fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education.
