Program description
Through critical and creative approaches that impact innovative change, the MN degree provides nursing graduates with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for principled and thoughtful leadership. This one-of-a-kind programme, with its admissions paths and emphasis on leadership development and Aboriginal health, addresses the need for accessible, flexible graduate nursing education. Graduates will be prepared to fill advanced nursing positions in complex and dynamic health care systems in British Columbia, as well as nationally and globally.
Students can study while working thanks to flexible delivery choices. Students who complete the MN will be able to pursue opportunities in health care leadership, teaching, research, or policy development.
Graduates are expected to work in the following fields:
- Local, provincial, territorial, national, or foreign health-care positions
- Advanced clinical work in a hospital or in the community
- Academic or clinical teaching positions
- Managerial jobs in hospitals or communities
- Positions in provincial, territorial, national, or foreign health ministries or related areas

Requirements for applicants
- Evidence of licensure (practicing, non-practicing or temporary) as a Registered Nurse in Canada or international equivalency.
- Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status or valid student permit issued by Canada (indicating TRU as a place of study).
- Official copies of all post-secondary transcripts.
- Two letters of reference: including one academic and one professional.
- English language proficiency:
- Students who have completed studies in a country where English is not the official language, must also submit English language test scores.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) a minimum score of 7.0 and the following sub-test scores: Speaking 7.0, Writing 7.0, Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5 or
- Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL)
- iBT: a minimum score of 100 (iBT) with no section below a 20
- Paper-Based: 600 with a TWE of 5.0
Graduation Requirements
- A total of 33 graduate course credits required, of which 15 credits are from core courses. A total of 6-12 elective course credits are required depending upon the capstone options of a project/paper (6 credits) or thesis (12 credits). A required Advanced Nursing Internship elective will provide students with practice learning experience.
- Thesis or major paper or major project.
- Graduate students are to complete the program in no longer than 5 years or 15 consecutive terms (fall, winter, summer).
