Program description

The BMus (Hons) Composition for Screen degree at UCA will help you transform your passion for music into a profession as a skilled, collaborative, and insightful composer.

This degree, situated at UCA Farnham, focuses on musical composition for moving image, and will help you to create your own creative voice while learning a variety of skills in:

  • Creating compositions
  • Technical expertise and understanding
  • Notation for music (documenting and communicating your composition)
  • Philosophy of music

You'll have established your own approach to composition by the time you graduate, having taken advantage of collaborative opportunities with filmmakers, animators, actors, and game designers. You'll be a resilient and adaptive problem solver who can work alone or in groups, is informed about the creative industries, and has the foundations of a professional network to help you get started.

Before beginning your first year of study for a degree, you can also enroll in an international foundation year that focuses on English and essential creative abilities. You can also spend a year on a professional placement to obtain invaluable work experience before moving on to your final year of study.

Fee for two semesters (1 year) is 17,500 GBP for international students

Requirements for applicants

If you do not have qualifications from the United Kingdom, we will accept equivalent qualifications from your native country for admittance into our programs.

In addition to academic credentials, some of our courses require a portfolio of previous work.

For our Bachelor's courses, we usually require that you have:

  • High school leaving certificate or equivalent.
  • A transcript showing successful completion of one year of a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university with CGPA 3.8.

Portfolio requirements

For these course, you must perform an individual piece as an audition. This piece can be up to two minutes long and can be one of the following: a brief modern text (play or screenplay); a short piece of Shakespeare; or an original work you have composed.
