Program description
UCA Epsom's groundbreaking Master of Arts in Digital Fashion program immerses students in a fascinating field of study to clothe the Metaverse and beyond.
This revolutionary course, the first of its kind at UCA, links fashion and gaming and is taught by an award-winning team of researchers, industry pioneers, and academics. As luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana enter avatar clothing markets like Fortnite and League of Legends, this course uniquely prepares fashion creators for the future of self-expression.
You'll learn how to design material-free 3D clothing and environments for a virtual catwalk show, a brand's digital marketing campaign, an interactive AR couture collection, a game's groundbreaking skin launch, or a virtual influencer who needs a fashion edge. UCA's innovative Marvelous Designer, Substance, and Unreal Engine 5 curriculum makes this possible.
As gaming gets more popular and avatar clothes sell for hundreds of pounds, the $5 billion gaming skins industry has huge potential.
AI, VR, AR, and GPUs are progressing rapidly, enabling new immersive interaction methods. Fashion entrepreneurs can shape AR try-on apps, VR avatar apparel, and the Metaverse.
Program structure
Term one
- Digital Practice
This course focuses on in-depth experimentation with digital design tools, such as 3D pattern cutting design software, utilised in the design of video games, animation, digital textiles, and fashion.
In order to determine the digital fashion concept you intend to build, you will analyse and reflect on your research ideas as well as your current analogue and digital skills. In order to investigate how future consumers may engage with, relate to, and consume digital fashion and clothing, trend forecasting and abstract notions will be examined. Your self-negotiated project proposal, which will be developed and improved throughout the course, will be created with the aid of these approaches.
Term two
- Project Development
To assist and guide the design and modification of your digital fashion concept, you will use abilities from term one. As you begin to create a body of work, it must be relevant for the desired market, target consumer, and season and should unmistakably show how your skills as a digital fashion designer are developing.
You will use a variety of tools, methods, concepts, and processes to create your digital fashion collection while examining the relationship between the real world and the virtual one, as well as physical and digital capabilities. You will think about how fashion can exist and be consumed in the near future as you create distinctive and immersive fashion content tailored to the chosen creative sector, platform, or audience.
Term three
- Final Project Realisation
To produce your final body of work and exit portfolio, you will use the knowledge you learned through your research and the abilities you developed in terms one and two. This unit serves as the pinnacle of your studies and a showcase for the knowledge, abilities, and innovative thinking that you have acquired throughout your MA.
You will be able to realise and launch a creative statement that is future-proofed and that showcases your skills at the greatest level after successfully completing the course. You'll be able to showcase cutting-edge digital design solutions while articulating a clear design style and conceptual approach.
