Program description

Our MA Experimental Film course at UCA Farnham will provide you the knowledge, insight, and skills to produce fascinating new work if you wish to broaden your understanding of moving image beyond conventional film.

This full-time, one-year study will assist in your growth as a creative moving image specialist by pushing the boundaries of your practise and thought as well as your aesthetic and scholarly interests.

You'll work with both 16mm equipment and digital techniques to create the stylized films and moving image pieces you really want to make, guided by internationally recognised faculty and inspired by an intriguing spectrum of notable visiting artists and theorists. As you explore the concepts, practises, and creations of some of the foremost exponents of the genre, you'll develop a broader grasp of worldwide perspectives on experimental film along the way.

For this course, you don't need any prior formal filmmaking experience; instead, we invite students whose creativity shows visual, intellectual, and emotional engagement as well as those who are open to unconventional and new ways of thinking.

You can choose the Integrated International Pre-Masters, a year-long preparatory programme of study to get you ready for your master's in the UK, improving your speaking and writing skills in English along with your specialty skills, research knowledge, and self-confidence.

Program structure

Term one

  • Practice & Context: History of Experimental Film

By connecting these filmmaking and critical methods to current problems in visual and material culture, you will be introduced to the major works, concepts, and debates in experimental film.

You will gain the critical thinking, analytical, and evaluation abilities required to position your practise and your unique filmmaking voice as well as to prepare you for the production of your main project.

You will conduct research on an aspect of experimental cinema practise as part of this unit that relates to your personal interests and deepens your comprehension of both your work and its settings. Your research findings will be presented as a body of visual research work intended to help you advance your practise.

Annual changes in subject approaches and discourses will be reflected in the specific content of lectures, seminars, and workshops. To ensure that you are exposed to contemporary debates and practitioners, the unit will be taught by a mix of artists and instructors.

  • Making Techniques

You will be pushed to advance your technical expertise, knowledge, and curiosity within your personal filmmaking process. Various techniques and approaches utilised in modern practise can be explored through a series of hands-on workshops.

You'll create brief experimental pieces that use both analogue and digital formats. This unit will help you hone your research and development skills by asking that you offer written proof with your films in the form of a blog post or reflective research journal.

Term two

  • Project Development & Distribution

The early stages of constructing your major practical project are the focus of this subject, which is organised around the creative, organisational, and technical processes. With a project proposal and a development plan, you will start this.

You will also be expected to do research and provide evidence of your understanding of contemporary moving picture media dissemination tactics by collaborating with individuals and organisations outside the university. You will be able to fine-tune your project's contextual setting and contemporary site as a result of your research experiences with in-person and online events, festivals, street art, and gallery installations.

Term three

  • Final Major Project

Your exploration and examination of critical discourse, practise, and research in this subject will continue from Project Development & Distribution to help shape your main project. The main characteristics of your final project are your voice as an artist and filmmaker and the setting your work establishes.

You will be asked to look forward to new technologies and dissemination techniques in the quest and realisation of your project. You will be expected to go beyond the present limitations/ideas of "experimental film." Along with your practical talents, increase your agility and adaptability, and keep refining your introspective practise with a thoughtful and determined attitude. The intellectual, aesthetic, social, and technical processes involved will all be covered in this exercise.

The unit will also help you learn about and develop your skills related to preparing for a career in the creative industries. The final project will be displayed in a setting/venue appropriate for the form, and you will graduate from the course with confidence in your abilities as a filmmaker and artist.
