Program description

The two-year MFA Photography programme at UCA offers you the opportunity to become a true authority in the field of photography thanks to its internationally renowned faculty.

You will be provided with the resources, freedom, and time to hone your abilities and find your professional niche under the direction of award-winning photographer Anna Fox and with the support of an exceptional team that includes photographer and video artist Ori Gersht, Professorial Fellow Sunil Gupta, award-winning photographer Karen Knorr, and gifted sessional staff.

You'll have the freedom to appreciate photography more, investigate various techniques, tools, and theories, and improve your research abilities. Additionally, after conducting thorough career research, you will determine which area of photography you want to work in before undertaking pertinent work placements that will enable you to get crucial experience and network-building possibilities.

The remarkable worldwide perspective provided by this MFA photography course is a special feature made possible by the multinational nature of its student body, faculty, and industry links. There are options to study at other institutions in Europe and China as well as at other prominent institutions across the world with which the programme has strong relationships, such as the National Institute of Design in India.

You can choose the Integrated International Pre-Masters, a year-long preparatory programme of study to get you ready for your master's in the UK, improving your speaking and writing skills in English along with your specialty skills, research knowledge, and self-confidence.

Program structure

Year one

  • Critical Perspectives

Along with students from the MA Fine Art programme, you will study the significance of modern practise and working methods through a series of lectures, discussions in seminar sessions, and written pieces.

Together, you will gain knowledge of the variety of theoretical and critical discussions that have had a considerable impact on current practise. You'll think about the materials you use and how they could fit in a larger cultural framework in addition to understanding how these relate to political and social circumstances.

  • Exploratory Practice

To broaden your scope of knowledge and areas of interest, you'll be experimenting and testing out new concepts, techniques, and materials. We'll be looking for you to be curious, try new things, take chances, and be bold.

You'll gain a genuine understanding of the tools and materials you want to employ and why, as well as the inquiries you want to make and why. You will experience the delight of your trade not only through the theory and practise of photography, but also through the development and study of your original concepts.

  • Research and Development

You'll learn how to thoroughly explore specific methodologies, theories, and practises in order to further your experimental work so that you can fully comprehend how research is entirely integrated into your practise.

In order to better prepare you for professional practise or alternative vocations, you will also comprehensively investigate the photography industry and its affiliates on a global scale.

  • International Exchange (optional)

You will have the chance to pursue a term of study abroad thanks to the course's affiliations with a variety of top international institutions, including those in India, Sweden, Spain, and the USA. This is best taken in year one's second term or year two's third term.

Year two

  • Advanced Practice

You'll build on your research from Year One and critically assess it as well as your own practise in this continuation of your studies, improving your skills as you create the idea for your Final Project. You'll be asked to develop a novel project idea that will carry you through the entire year.

Additionally, you'll complete a work placement that you'll have studied for in Year One.

  • Final Project

Your studies will come to a close with your final project, which should completely showcase the talents and interests you've cultivated. You have the option of submitting either a practice-only, theory-only, or a hybrid Final Project.

If you're presenting a practice-only Final Project, it should resolve earlier project units and show evidence of highly developed conceptual, theoretical, and technical ability acquired over a lengthy period of independent study. A theory-only Final Project gives you the chance to conduct an extended investigation that exhibits your intellectual and theoretical understanding of your research question, whereas the combination allows you to submit a body of practical work along with a more concise written essay.

  • International Exchange (optional)

You will have the chance to pursue a term of study abroad thanks to the course's affiliations with a variety of top international institutions, including those in India, Sweden, Spain, and the USA. This is best taken in year one's second term or year two's third term.
