Program description

What does being an artist mean today? You will think about and take action on this subject during our MA Fine Art course at UCA Canterbury in order to reexamine your work and advance your own practise.

Our interdisciplinary course, which is open to theorists, designers, illustrators, architects, and graduates of the humanities, is intended to spark fresh ideas for advanced study of fine art.

You will collaborate closely with regional and national art galleries and public institutions, such as Turner Contemporary, Whitstable Biennale, Strange Cargo, and the Folkestone Triennial, and you will receive active encouragement to create and exhibit work outside of the university setting in order to reach a wider audience. You can expand your personal network, improve the criticality and articulation of your practise, and build your personal network by participating in guest lectures, artist masterclasses, and professional practise seminars. You will be able to identify, create, and manage your own Master's project in a variety of social, cultural, artistic, and intellectual contexts by the end of the semester, working independently. You might want to use your degree to launch a career showing your own or other people's art, get into film and video editing, enter the field of education, or work in the print or photography industries.

A group of instructors who continue to excel in their individual disciplines lead our course. Steffi Klenz, an internationally renowned photographer, Edward Chell, a mixed-media painter who specialises in teaching, and Professor Andrew Kotting, a short film and documentary maker, will be your teachers as you pursue your studies.

You can choose the Integrated International Pre-Masters, a year-long preparatory programme of study to get you ready for your master's in the UK, improving your speaking and writing skills in English along with your specialty skills, research knowledge, and self-confidence.

Program structure

Term one

  • Context and Method

You will be challenged to think about specific texts in this unit in order to examine important themes and ideas that have affected modern art theory and practise. You will discuss texts from aesthetic, literary, and philosophical contexts in seminars and lectures. You'll gain knowledge of the research methods that are available to you for your studies as well as be given a chance to consider your own ideas.

  • Exploring Practice

Through practical inquiry, group discussion of ongoing work, and one-on-one tutorials, you'll examine your own creative practise and how it fits into the larger context of contemporary art, running concurrently with Context and Method. This will enable you to focus on the artistic disciplines that most interest you and to create your MA project proposal, a written submission that will be evaluated at the end of the unit together with a demonstration of your practical work.

Term two

  • Project Development

You'll start working on your MA project proposal while assessing and putting ideas and approaches to the test. Through one-on-one tutorials and group evaluations, you will be led and questioned, and you will be urged to keep probing and exploring your ideas all along. You will also write a critical research paper, and you are strongly encouraged to display and share your work outside of the university setting.

Term three

  • Final Project

Your final project, which represents the apex of all that you have learnt throughout the course, will be the main focus of your last term. You'll come up with an idea for a piece that can be published, shown, or distributed to the general public or to other professionals. You'll be pushed to develop something challenging but with a high level of professionalism. You will also create a critical analysis article and a professional practise folio in addition to your final body of work.
