Program description
You can become an expert in exploring and addressing complex ecosystems and landscape design difficulties by enrolling in UCA's new MA in Landscape Architecture.
This course, which is taught at the Canterbury School of Architecture and Design, will help you develop a personalised approach to landscape design in a challenging, imaginative, and supportive environment. You will be able to acquire and display specialised experience and knowledge through research-led practise and experimental design, and you will be able to showcase your intended outcomes in a polished final portfolio.
Our degree may serve as a springboard for future higher-level professions in landscape architecture and design. You could opt to concentrate on ecological design, climate knowledge, carbon capture landscapes, horticulture, agriculture, ecosystem repair, urban landscapes, or specialised land management in your projects. Working with intriguing heritage and sustainability issues, utilising both cutting-edge technology and traditional landscape crafts, and exploring both virtual and'real' space are all options.
In our designated studio spaces and workshops, you will receive instruction through one-on-one tuition, seminars, and self-directed study while conversing with practitioners and academics who provide knowledgeable industry and research intelligence. Regular reviews with visiting reviewers from many pertinent industry areas as well as study abroad trips are part of the course.
You can choose the Integrated International Pre-Masters, a year-long preparatory programme of study to get you ready for your master's in the UK, improving your speaking and writing skills in English along with your specialty skills, research knowledge, and self-confidence.
Program structure
Term one
The University, its technical workshops, and other resources will be introduced to you. In the first term, you'll take part in a variety of lectures and seminars and begin to investigate your creative practice.
- Context and Methods
The unit encourages your active engagement with a variety of current topics that provide a cultural and intellectual background for thinking about concepts in architecture, fine art, and design through a series of lectures and seminars. Through the debate of theory and the analysis of particular structures, pieces of art, and texts, the course explores cross-disciplinary themes in architecture, fine art, and design.
- Exploratory Practice
In order to help you create your project idea in detail for the subsequent parts of the course, this unit is concerned with the examination of creative activity. It offers a structured framework that enables you to look into the potential of approaches, concepts, and themes in your field.
Term two
You start working on your MA project during term two, analyzing and testing the objectives of your proposal during an extended period of self-directed study.
- Project Development
Over the course of an extended period of self-directed study, you start to create your MA project, analyzing and testing the objectives of your proposal. At this point in the course, tutorials, group critiques, and presentations all serve to direct and challenge the project's progress. These help your work advance and offer a rigorous critical evaluation from faculty, fellow students, and practicing professionals.
Term three
You'll use the knowledge you learn through your research to produce a final body of work in the third term of the course.
- Final Realisation
You will use the knowledge you learn through your study in this course to create a final body of work. You'll show how your MA project's subject and methodology have the potential to inspire knowledge-embodying creative activity. You may need to further hone your technical and presentational abilities during this process, as well as comprehend how they contribute to the creation of meaning in the finished output.

Requirements for applicants
If you do not have qualifications from the United Kingdom, we will accept equivalent qualifications from your native country for admittance into our programs.
In addition to academic credentials, some of our courses require a portfolio of previous work.
For our Master's courses, we usually require that you have successful completion of your Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognised university.
For the Master of Architecture (MArch), we require the equivalent of a UK 2:1 Honours degree in Architecture. The exact grade required will be confirmed at the time of application.

Portfolio requirements
We'll need to examine your written or graphic portfolio for these courses in order to review it. Once you've applied, we'll send you an invitation to submit your portfolio via your applicant portal; more details will be given at that time. This can also be arranged for you if you would prefer to evaluate your work with the Academic Team in person while on campus.
